Athletic Union Officer - Laura Mason

Hello, I’m Laura Mason and I was voted to be the Athletic Union Officer for 2012/13. I represent students in all things to do with sport. The following web pages are designed to give you all the information you will need about sport at Newcastle!

Sport is really important to Newcastle University, and Newcastle has done really well in the BUCS leagues in recent years (coming 10th in 2011-12). There are many different clubs available with something available for everyone across our 59 different sports. It is well worth getting involved whether it be competitively, against other universities in the BUCS leagues and matches, or Intra-mural competitions with your friends. It is a great chance to improve your skills and meet new people and get fit.

The Athletic Union is continually expanding its membership. At present, you can choose from 59 different sports clubs, ranging from the traditional sports such as Rugby, Football, Hockey and Netball, to more diverse sport clubs such as Ice hockey and Surfing. However if there is a sport you would like to see that is not already available, you can set up a club by looking on the website for document of coming to see me in my office!

The great thing about the Athletic Union at Newcastle is that it is all student lead. This allows opportunities for students to get involved with the sports clubs become committee members or even be Club president all which look great on the CV.

At Newcastle we feel that the student’s ownership over the sport at Newcastle has allowed students to feel part of something and i they are also the driving force to the increase in sporting standards at Newcastle which is great and we are proud that they are representing Team Newcastle.
