Each and every year Team Newcastle compete with its fierce rivals, Team Northumbria, in a host of sports in an attempt to secure what is considered by both institutions to be the biggest and most contested victory in the sporting calendar.

The one day event sees over 1500 athletes battling at venues all over the city in more than 25 sports, culminating in the final rugby match at Gateshead International Stadium where both teams dream of lifting the coveted trophy. In the 2009/10 competition nothing could stop Team Newcastle from storming to a comprehensive Victory, winning the competition 83.25-32.25, the largest margin in the history of the trophy!

The original date for the 2010/11 competition was set for Wednesday 15 December but freezing weather conditions and a large amount of snow caused the even to be postponed until the 30th March 2011 when a full schedule of fixtures went ahead.

Team Newcastle took advantage of the later date, beating the enemy 96.25 to 60.75 after all 26 sports were completed on a great day in March. including a landmark win for the Rugby Union 1st XV in the showpiece event at Gateshead Stadium. The 2010/11 result allowed Team Newcastle to become the first institution to win for a record-smashing fourth in a row!

This year, the event took place on Sunday 4th March 2012, and Team Newcastle managed to retain the Cup and win again for the fifth consecutive year, to make history once more! The final result was 100.5 - 52.5; the first time we have ever broken the magic number 100.
