New Prospects is an established provider of support for adults with learning disabilities in Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside and Northumberland since 1990. At New Prospects, we provide a specifically tailored service to every individual, working to support plans chosen by them. We support people to reach their hopes and dreams, to be safe and health, and to make their own choices so that they are in control of their life.
Recruitment and screening process for volunteers:
After expressing an interest in volunteering with New Prospects, students will be invited to an interview. This is a chance to find out more about New Prospects, and to discuss the details of their placement. Following an informal interview which is an opportunity for interested students to see our work first-hand and to meet some of the people we support.
A CRB check is required before students can commence volunteering with the organisation. This can be a lengthy process. Interested students should therefore apply as soon as possible and no later than the end of July 2012. The CRB check is of no cost to the student.

Description of role:
In this role, you enable and motivate adults with learning disabilities to engage and to take part in one or various group activity sessions. You take the lead which requires you to prepare session plans, organise materials you may need in your sessions, work within a team, and to evaluate the sessions.
Specific skills:
We are looking for students with a positive attitude who:

-work well in a team and have good communication skills
-are reliable and honour agreements
-have a real interest in the people we support
-is energetic and confident to take the initiative
-is patient and understanding of people’s varied abilities and support needs
-has good communication skills
-has an awareness of group dynamics and is skilled in conflict resolution
Training:
Previous experience with people with learning disabilities or specific training is not required for this role. The session(s) you develop can be based on your own professional or personal skills, talents or interests. You work within a team and have the support / assistance of trained staff who work alongside you.
