► SU Council

Student Council is your chance to have your say.

NEXT STUDENT COUNCIL IS THURSDAY 1ST MARCH
(5PM, THE HISTORY ROOM, NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS' UNION)

"Really? I've never even heard of it. What is Student Council?"

We want students to know how important Student Council is!

Student Council decides the campaigns we run, the products we sell, the events we support, what your elected Officers are up to, the work we are doing every day for our students. We are the decision making body of your Students' Union.

But none of this works without students. This really is the chance for you to have your say. Please come along and find out more!

"How can a student get involved and have their say then?"

Loads of different ways.

1. JUST TURN UP

Lots of students think they can't turn up - because they've never been before, aren't a Councillor or elected to any position.

But they can. Any student is welcome at Council - to ask questions of their elected Officers, to hear about what the SU are doing or to debate the hot issues of the day. Get involved!

2. GET VOTING

We have a set amount of voters on Student Council - around 70 - but 5 of these are reserved as open spaces for any interested student. BUT we are making some extra open places available! So if you want a vote on Student Council, come along on Thursday 1st March and make your case!

3. SUBMIT A MOTION

Even without a vote, you can set the tone of the debate. If there's something you really want to do, something that is really winding you up and want to see fixed, then you can submit a motion which will be discussed and voted on.

Don't worry if you don't know how - here is a handy guide. If you're still confused, please e-mail Sheila in the Admin Office (gocouncil.union@ncl.ac.uk) and she’ll be happy to help.

“Does Student Council really actually change anything?”

All the time!

Because of Student Council, the Students’ Union campaigned to save Combined Honours from closure, campaigned to oppose changes to international student VISAs, brought in a Safe Drinking Policy, banned initiations and bar crawls to protect the welfare of students, lobbied the University to divest in companies involved in the arms trade, ensured provision to ensure zero tolerance to sexual harassment and diversity training for all involved in Students’ Union events, mandated the SU to oppose tuition fee increases and attend national demonstrations and much MUCH more!

Maybe you agree with the above and maybe you don’t. If you don’t, get involved and change it!

Come along and see what it's all about...
