1. ‘Societal Challenge themes in Learning and Teaching’ event: Friday 20th April, 2-5pm
As a university we are focussing on three Societal Challenge themes as a response to some of the most pressing needs within society. Our three themes are:
- Ageing and Health - Our Changing Age theme is a development of our expertise on the ageing process and the implications for society. We have the largest number of academics working on aspects of ageing in Europe, many based on a purpose-built campus operated in partnership with the NHS Trust.
- Sustainability - Sustainability can be summarised as: 'enough, for all, forever'. Drawing on Newcastle University’s world-leading expertise in the fields of natural and urban environments, agriculture, transport, water, energy, marine technology and clean industrial production, the Newcastle Institute for Research on Sustainability has been established to develop innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems.
- Social Renewal - Newcastle has significant strengths in research relating to how individuals, communities and organisations adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing and challenging environment. We have created the Newcastle Institute for Social Renewal as a hub for research activity which is focused on asking the big questions facing our society.
I am inviting you, as a Course Rep, to take part in an event to showcase examples of how and where these Societal Challenge themes are currently embedded in learning and teaching. You can join staff in discussing examples where research which is directly related to a Societal Challenge theme is providing learning opportunities for students. We hope that such models will provide transferable ideas and opportunities to how the same Societal Challenge theme-related research can be embedded into the teaching in degree programmes, and into broader learning opportunities available to students.
The event is on Friday 20th April from 2-5pm. It will include presentations from staff and students who are already
offering student learning opportunities that put these Societal Challenge themes into practice. There will also be opportunities for your voice to be heard in group discussions about the types of opportunities that could benefit students.
I hope this opportunity is of interest to you. There are a limited number of places available at this event, so if you would like to take part please email Lydia.Wysocki@ncl.ac.uk by Friday 6th April.
With best wishes,
Suzanne Cholerton
Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching

FMS, ICM – May 22, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
