THE ALTERNATIVE SPORTS PROGRAMME!

Absolutely no experience necessary, no minimum fitness or maximum age, just come along and have a go! Our coaches will guide you from 'complete beginner' through all the basics, and we’ll get you playing in no time! Want something to be proud of this year? How about a brand new set of skills, and a sport to play confidently over the summer, and into next year!

Also on offer is the chance to train up as a coach, and if you find the sport is really your thing, the opportunity to set up a brand new club here at Newcastle, or join the existing one. But there’s no commitment: if you love it, we’ll find ways to keep you playing, if you don’t, you can forget all about it. Just enjoy the extra fitness and meet a few like-minded students: the focus is on fun, fitness, friends and NOT all about the elite!

It’s also a chance for you current sports players to try a new sport too, as the sessions won’t clash with your Wednesday afternoon matches. Come and try!

Want to get involved? Come to the Activities office in the brand new Students’ Union building and get your place booked on the taster session of your choice, first come, first served; or you can check the NUSU website or email active.union@ncl.ac.uk for more information. Sessions are just a couple of quid a go, with no membership signup required. Easy peasy!

TERM ONE:

The first ever Go Play sessions ran during October and November 2011. We had a great response, and 180 students tried a new sport or took up an activity for fun. Feedback was very positive, and GOLF and HANDBALL were regularly sold out due to demand! Handball managed to become a brand new AU club, through the commitment and enthusiasm of those who turned up for Go Play sessions, and the Dodgeball Tournament was a great hit, so we'll be repeating it in Term 2 at least once!

TERM TWO:

We kicked off a whole whost of new sports, and re-ran the most popular ones. Participation increased and we had floods more people enjoying Go Play sports on a casual basis. Most popular sports were BASKETBALL, TABLE TENNIS, which added a 'free turn up and play at lunchtime' element to the programme and was very well received, and of course GOLF again (where else can you get professional coaching, clubs and ball hire, entrance to the driving range, and transport for £3 a session!?). We reprised the amazing Charity DODGEBALL tournament, increasing it to run over 2 days, and had great fun with fancy dress and prizes.

TERM THREE:

We're running a slightly smaller selection of sports this term, as we know you'll be busy preparing for exams. BUT if you do fancy it, we've got free TABLE TENNIS and ROUNDERS for when you need a break! Also, BASKETBALL is running again, for boys, girls, beginners, experienced players... everyone! It's a real chance to hone (or learn!) your skills in a VERY friendly environment. The students from last term requested we run it again, so it must be doing something right!

IN YEAR TWO: (2012/13, we hope to exceed these numbers and get more students playing for fun, fitness and friends... and that's what we're all about!
