Opportunity arises for two students to become trustees, and shape the direction of the Union!
By Current Vacancies

Newcastle University Students’ Union is looking to appoint two students on to its Board of Trustees. The Board has ultimate responsibility for the affairs of the Students’ Union as it is a fully registered charity, and student representation on the Board is essential to ensure that as an organisation we remain ‘student led’.

The Students’ Union provides a wide range of services and activities to its membership of over 20,000 students studying at Newcastle University, and the trustees play a key role in shaping the future strategic direction of our organisation. Trustees will meet six times over the academic year. Key responsibilities include: ensuring the Union is operated within the legal framework and charity law; approving the strategic plan; monitoring the progress of the Union against key objectives; taking responsibility for prudent financial management. Applicants will be given full induction training on their role.

It is essential that student trustees have a good understanding of the values and ethos of the Union, and be able to commit to the six board meetings a year, as well as other associated commitments and sub-committees. It is desirable that they will have an understanding of financial accounting, and other business related skill-sets such as law (particularly charity law), business management or marketing. They will work closely with six elected sabbatical officers and four appointed lay trustees who comprise the remainder of the Board of Trustees.

It is also essential that all trustees: are over 18 years of age; have never been convicted of any offence involving deception or dishonesty; have never been bankrupt; have never made compositions with creditors and not been discharged; have not been previously removed from being a trustee for misconduct; and have never failed to make a payment under the County Court Administrators’ orders.
