About Us

Since being set up by Students in (Esta to find out year Newcastle Nightline started if possible) Newcastle Nightline has been listening, providing emotional support and information to students, every night during term time, 8pm-8am. Today we remain student ran and on the other end of the phone when its likely that there is no-one else you can talk to.

You can talk to us about absolutely anything:

• Relationship issues or problems with flatmates
• Just to chat
• Information on university services or local organisations.
• Feeling homesick
• Exam or assessment stress
• Problems sleeping
• Bereavement
• Problems at home
• Drug or substance abuse
• Emergency situations where you aren’t sure who to contact
• Mental health issues, thoughts of self harm or suicide
• Etc. Etc. Etc.

Our listening volunteers, each a current student at Newcastle University, are extensively trained simply to listen and are ready to provide the best support they can.

Our Principles:

Confidentiality: Anything you have to say is kept between you and the listening volunteer you speak to. We don’t and can’t pass on your details (see anonymity) and wont share anything outside the service.

Anonymity: Our phones work so that there is no way of tracing your call or finding out who you are. You don’t even have to give us your name if you don’t want to. We give students the space to openly discuss their situation, what detail you provide is up to you, we don’t record any of it.

Non-Advisory: We aren’t training or certified to give advice, we simply listen. However unclear it might seem, you know your situation better than we do and probably know what options you have. We hope that by giving you the opportunity to talk things through, you will feel better about your situation and know what steps you might like to take. We wont lecture you. Remember we can signpost you to other services you might find helpful if you would like us to.

Non-Judgmental: The student body is diverse and come to us with any manner of issues. Perhaps you or someone you know has done something you/they aren’t particularly proud of. Our place isn’t to pass judgment and we provide the same service to any of our callers.

Non-Directive: The call is about you and what you want to talk about us. We won’t presume anything at any point and whilst we might ask questions to help you explore things its up to you what you want to discuss. You can hang up at any point without explanation, we’ll listen for as long as you need/want us to.

And finally…

If you see Neville, our mascot, around campus give him a hug.

Join us on facebook (link straight to page) for news and updates on the service, details of competitions we will be running during term time etc.

In the next few years we will also look to develop our service- providing new ways of talking to us and offering the service to more students.

For more information on the service nationally visit http://nightline.ac.uk/

We hope you’ll call if you need us- Nightline will be available for as long as Students want to talk.
