What is RAG...

RAG stands for Raising and Giving. It is a charity responsible for fundraising within NUSU and is headed by two organisers: Georgie Nunan and Sophie Ryan. A committee of 18 work closely with the two organisers to plan the events for the week, and a crew of 140 volunteers lend their time to raise as much money as possible for the year’s six nominated charities. RAG runs many different events throughout the year, but RAG week itself is the main focus.

This year, RAG week is running from January 28th to February 2nd and will consist of both day and night time fundraising events – from collecting on the streets of Newcastle to numerous different events staged in our fantastic new Union.

RAG also offers exciting opportunities to fundraise through personal challenges overseas. Take a peek at www.studentadventures.co.uk for more information on some exciting new adventures; including sailing the South China seas, cycling the cape of South Africa and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

If you got tired just reading that but still fancy having an adventure, why not consider Jailbreak. Travel in groups of two or three and attempt to get as far away from Newcastle as possible in 36 hours – without spending a penny! Last year there were some serious success stories, with Jailbreakers reaching as far and wide as Canada and even South Africa. More information on Jailbreak 2012 will be released soon so watch this space.

You can even help raise money for RAG on your Saturday nights out – Every other Saturday there is a RAG social, which ends at CCTV. Everyone is welcome and embracing the weekly fancy dress theme is strongly encouraged! Meet us in Mens Bar at 10:30pm to get your wristband that gives you guaranteed reduced entry at just £3, and ensures a whole £1 goes to RAG. Keep an eye on the Facebook page for event details.
