► Parent/Guardian FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1. My son/daughter has a problem can I come with him/her to his/her appointment?

YES, but you must understand that the student is the person with the appointment not the parent/guardian, so the adviser will discuss the issue with the student. The parent/guardian are there in a supporting capacity only.

2. Can I attend an appointment with the Student Advice Centre instead of my son/daughter?

YES, but only as a basic information session, the Student Advice Centre adviser will not discuss an individuals case with a 3rd party in their absence.

3. Will the Student Advice Centre deal with any student case or issue?

YES in principle (although we don't deal with immigration), but we do empower students to do as much of the work as possible and only once it is no longer relevant for this to continue, do we take on the case ourselves.

4. The issue is with the University, is the Student Advice Centre still able to help?

YES we are independent from them and as such can represent a student in a case against the University.

5. What is the difference between the Student Advice Centre Financial Adviser and the University's Student Financial Adviser?

The Student Advice Centre Financial Adviser deals with pre-entry and post entry (up to 1 year) students on issues such as benefits, debt, complicated Student Finance England cases, financial maximisation.

The University Student Financial Adviser deals with eligibility for Student Finance England and all other Student Finance England cases, budgeting, financial awareness, ALF and FAF.
