Tenancy Deposits

Tenancy deposit disputes are possibly one of the biggest tenancy issues that students present to the Student Advice Centre with. This is usually after the tenancy has ended, but not always.

Protect yourselves by checking what your contract says and checking this out. If you have an Assured Shorthold Tenancy agreement (the default tenancy in England) then it is more than likely your deposit should be protected in one of 3 Government backed Tenancy Deposit Protection schemes.

Unipol, Student Homes and National Union of Student have provided a Tenancy Deposit Protection: Enforcement Pack.

Hopefully you will not have any issues as a private rented tenant but being prepared and knowledgeable about the private rented sector will hopefully prevent some issues arising.
