Legal

Hopefully during your time at University you will not experience any legal problems. However, if you do you will more than likely need some advice to assist you. Regardless or whether this is criminal or civil matter, our advisors can assist you up to a point on your legal position and rights. Their advice however may be that you consult with a solicitor for specialist advice and legal representation.

Please note, that as an impartial advice service, the Student Advice Centre cannot recommend a specific legal practice.

Legal Aid

Whether you are a claimant or a defendent you can find a valuable resource of information, guidance and forms on the HM Court Service including how to make a Money Claim Online (MCOL)

In some limited circumstances, legal aid may be available if you meet specific eligibility criteria. You can find more out about legal aid funding on the Legal Services Commission (LSC) website.

If you cannot get free legal assistance we can refer you or you can make a direct approach to the Student Law Office at Northumbria University who will consider taking your case.

Witnessing a Crime

If you witness a crime or have information about a crime you can either report this direct to the police or report this anonymously to Crimestoppers.

If you are a victim of a reported crime, you may be referred by the police to Victim Support. The Student Advice Centre also runs a Victim Support drop-in service every other Friday 1pm - 3pm term-time only. The Victim Support Helpline is 0845 2770977 or 0191 2810491.

In an emergency always call Northumbria Police on 999 or in non-emergency situations on 03456 043 043.
