Do you want to help give someone a chance of real independence? This project could be the one! Gateway wheelers is a small North East cycling club for disabled people of all ages. The club provides bespoke cycles to meet the needs of the disabled cyclist, giving people with quite severe disabilities the chance to cycle independently. Rides take place throughout picturesque areas of Tyne and Wear and Yarm in Teeside. Volunteers are needed to assist the cycling trips, helping the people with special needs to get the most from the day. There is also the opportunity for mechanically minded volunteers to become involved in the construction and maintenance of the specialised bikes! Get that swarfega out…..
Volunteers will gain:
• Experience and skills of working with people who have special needs
• Communication and befriending skills
• Organising and running events
• Risk assessment skills
• Bike maintenance (if you want to!) there is an intensive bike maintenance course for those that wish to do this.
Full induction training will be given, with additional courses available in:
• Disability awareness
• Guiding the visually impaired
• Cycle training
Travel expenses and meal allowances are given. All volunteers receive a club t-shirt.
