The Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter is a member of The Dog’s Home Association. We receive over 4,000 animals each year between our shelters at Claremont Road and Benton farm. We provide shelter and care for lost, unwanted and neglected animals, mostly dogs and cats. We try our best to find suitable homes for them, if unable to reunite these with their owners. We promote responsible ownership, neutering and microchipping and the prevention of cruelty to animals. We are contracted with the Councils and Northumbria police for the collection, knelling and care of stray dogs and cover a large catchment area including Berwick to Newcastle to Sunderland to Hexham. We receive no government funding.
The Claremont Road Shelter is over 100 years old. The buildings are Victorian and show the ravages of time. We have raised funds over the years and phase one (a kennel clock and runs) was completed in 2002. The second phase consists of demolishing and rebuilding 29 kennels with runs and an exercising area.
Volunteers are needed to organise and participate in fundraising events in aid of/in behalf of our charity. Volunteers will gain skills and experience in team work, communication, planning and organising activities/events, helping lost, unwanted and neglected animals and will also be helping towards to a safer and cleaner environment for the community.
