Newcastle City Council Ranger Service @ Tyne Riverside Country Park, Newburn
Where: Tyne Riverside Country Park is a Newburn, a bus from Newcastle Central Station will take you there.
When: Friday mornings 10am-12.30pm
What: Newcastle City Council’s Ranger Service looks after Parks and Countryside sites in the city, managing them for the benefit of wildlife as well as the local communities who use them for recreational purposes. The Rangers are looking for new volunteers to help with a variety of practical tasks to maintain these areas and to improve habitats for wildlife.
Volunteer Role: Volunteer Ranger – working with the Rangers to carry out a variety of outdoor environmental tasks, such as tree planting, thinning plantations, grassland management, pruning, gardening, litter picking, fencing and path maintenance.
This work is usually at Tyne Riverside Country Park but may occasionally be at another site nearby. IF this is the case, we will take you there. The group meets at 9.30am and we work until 12.30pm on Friday mornings. We do not pay travel expenses but a light lunch is provided. Volunteers should wear old clothes that they do not mind getting dirty. Stout footwear is recommended. We have some waterproof clothing and wellingtons available for loan.
Skills/experience: Practical conservation skills, use of hand tools. Identification skills – plants, insects, birds. ‘People’ skills – working with people of all abilities from varied backgrounds. Habitat management skills – learning about the management of habitats such as meadow, pond and woodland.
