► SCAN - Cookie Club

When : Monday and Wednesday afternoons (approximately 3.15pm-6.00pm).

Where :Local women’s refuge, volunteers meet at the SCAN Office to travel to the refuge together by car or Metro.

What : An after school club for the children living in the refuge with their mothers. The purpose is to allow the mothers to take a little time out from their children, knowing they are enjoying themselves in a safe and fun environment. Volunteers organise play activities in the refuge or take the children on external outings. Activities take place in the refuge play room. Activities in the past have including Halloween mask making, treasure hunts, sunflower growing, visits to museums & Metroland trips. The children will be of varying ages and volunteers will regularly meet new children and say goodbye to old ones as families move in and out of the refuge. The project particularly looks for male volunteers who can provide strong male role models for the children, the refuge is rare in that it admits men onto the premise where many others don’t.

Requirements : to sign up to this project you will need to undertake a Criminal Records Bureau Check through SCAN – you can start the project until this comes through. Volunteers should enjoy working with children, planning and creating play activities, be a team leader, be reliable and able to use discretion as they will be working with a vulnerable client group.

Training/Expenses : All out of pocket and travel expenses will be reimbursed by SCAN on the production of receipts and bus/metro tickets. SCAN provides a training programme surrounding issues relating to child protection and working with children for Cookie Club.
