► Kids Kabin

What: Kids Kabin is a purpose built Community Arts Centre based in the East End of Newcastle.
We provide creative activities in our purpose built ‘workshops’ which include pottery, woodwork, art, drama, glasswork, metalwork, music, IT and bicycle repairs.

Core objectives
1. To run an ongoing programme of activity sessions for 8-12 year olds in a wide range of creative arts and crafts to promote creative confidence and enable all participants to achieve.
2. To run a programme of day trips, camping trips and residential experiences to promote environmental awareness and skills such as independence, group responsibility and leadership.
3. To give all Kids Kabin members the opportunity to progress from participant to provider and take on increasing responsibility for the running of Kids Kabin through a young volunteer programme.
4. To set up a programme of satellite/on the move activities to be run by young volunteers, project development workers, professional artists and community volunteers.
5. To empower the community to take increasing responsibility for planning, fundraising, running and evaluating activities.

Volunteers are central to the running of Kids Kabin. The majority of people who run and facilitate activities are volunteers. Kids Kabin is also ‘governed’ by a management committee of volunteers. These volunteers are parents, previous Kids Kabin members, professionals and students.

The Role: Volunteers should enjoy working with children and be interested in creative arts. They would provide support to staff during sessions in any chosen activity as listed above.
Sessions

3.45pm – 5.15pm with 8 to 11 year olds
6.30pm – 8.00pm with 12 to 16 year olds
Two sessions per day, Monday to Thursday

Volunteers can also choose to provide support to staff on residential trips during the Easter/Summer holidays.

Skills/benefits/experiences:

Activity Training Sessions
Kids Kabin hopes to ensure that the highest possible level of services is provided, through training activities designed to equip our volunteers with essential skills, knowledge and attitudes.
The activities training sessions will be practical; they will cover risk assessment procedures and will be delivered by the Project Development Workers.

Ongoing Training
Further training opportunities will take a variety of formats, e.g. in-house training, when tasks are specific to Kids Kabin, or training with outside agencies for more generic skills. The trainers might be people from within Kids Kabin, or might be invited in from outside agencies to provide courses or give talks.

Evaluation
The keyworker will provide support for the volunteers. There will be a briefing session at the beginning and a debriefing at the end of each session. This gives staff and volunteers the opportunity to discuss activity sessions, celebrate achievements and raise any issues.
