Success 4 All’ is a social enterprise providing after school study support groups and language clubs to young people (9-19 years) in the community and in schools.
It is run by an experienced teacher together with volunteers from the universities, CVS and North of England Refugee Council. It supports the young people with their studies (mainly KS3, GCSE and A level). Many are from a BME background and need lots of encouragement. The student volunteers also have a very positive influence. Young people learn from best from other young people and it fosters an environment where there is no stigma attached to “not knowing” or “not being good at some things”
We currently run Study Support at the Millin Centre on Monday and Wednesdays at 5.30-7pm. We are also looking for student volunteers to help with the Young Writers Club (also held at the Millin Centre at the same time) and with the French, Italian and Spanish language clubs
Volunteer Roles
Volunteers for both roles will be asked to keep confidentially about the young person and to agree to a minimum commitment of three months. They will also be asked to keep a record of sessions in a handbook.
Tutor and Mentor
You will be required to help interview and help fill out forms, to befriend the young persons, establish the young persons education needs, consult with the study support coordinator, help with homework assignments and exam practice, keep records and give feedback.
Language tutor
Organise games, songs, activities in the chosen language, contribute to or take part in other activities, consult with language club coordinator, keep records and give feedback.
Volunteers will not be asked to deal with grievances and discipline, deal with accidents and first aid or deal with admin except keeping a short record or your sessions.
Skills/experience/training and benefits
Volunteers will gain satisfaction from being able to help someone; revisiting basics of exam practice may be beneficial for your own exams, gain confidence of work settings, gain insights into teaching/mentoring and community work. References will also be given for future job applications/PGCE course etc.
You will develop skills in problem solving; finding the best way to help someone; research; finding best resources and interpersonal; learning to encourage and give advice.
Training will be given in coaching and tutoring and child protection
