What: A range of practical and hands-on services for children with autism, their families and their carers. These include a child development team, communication support service, family advice/liaison unit and a specialist after school care support unit (due to open in summer 2003).
As well as working directly with the children and their families / carers, volunteers can get involved in the day-to-day running of the centre and fundraising for various high-profile events. Volunteers will be involved in feedback, coaching and training with the families. The THT utilises both traditional and “alternative” approaches to their work, judged on a case-to-case basis.
Where: At the Toby Henderson Trust centre, Morpeth, and in the families’ homes.
Requirements: Own transport required, as the centre is in a rural area, one mile from public transport in Morpeth.
Training: Extensive in-house training is given to volunteers. This includes speech & language, child development and occupational therapy. There is the opportunity to access numerous externally run training programmes.
