► University Women's International Group (UWIG)

What : UWIG is a voluntary organisation run by a group of university women for the benefit of families of overseas staff and postgraduate students at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. We offer friendship, social meetings, English conversation and an introduction to British culture. Mothers may bring their children with them and there is no charge.

Volunteers are required (during term-time) between 9.45am and 12noon. Volunteers help with entertaining children during English classes. This comprises playing and generally looking after mainly pre-school children and babies of families of postgrad students and staff from overseas. This is in the presence of their mothers, and allows the mothers to participate in the classes more easily. No special training is needed but reliability, flexibility and common sense.

Skills Acquisition: This opportunity allows volunteers the experience of meeting children and adults from different countries, mostly non English speakers and appreciating a variety of cultures engaging with children and adults who are non-English speakers and to appreciate a variety of cultures different from their own. They demonstrate reliability and adaptability.
