Henshaw Society for Blind People

We give expert support, advice and training to anyone affected by sight loss, right where it is needed most. We work across the North East, delivering a wide range of services and support for blind and visually impaired people of all ages. And because a persons sight loss affects friends, family and colleagues, we work with them too. We enable and encourage people to build the skills and independence they need, to get the future they want.

Some of the things we do are, the children and families service, where we will support the whole family, also giving individual support where it is needed. We have fun and educational activities, parents groups, holiday clubs, a sensory room and a fantastic toy library.

Our community house based in Gateshead is purposefully run for people with visual impairments and learning disabilities, allowing residents to live independently in a safe, supported and caring environment.

Volunteers are needed in the following areas:

1.Collectors, (Street and supermarkets)
Various times and dates.

2.Help at events (Admin work, marshalling, etc
Various times and dates

3.Some office work

4. Volunteers to help with children’s clubs

Skills/benefits/experiences: Anyone volunteering will get the help and support needed to complete the role they undertake. Volunteers can gain experience of working with visually Impaired children and adults, knowing that they are helping a worthwhile cause. Its also fun when collecting as you are meeting the general public. You will gain confidence and the ability to mix with other volunteers of all ages.
