What:
The County Durham Society for the Blind and Partially Sighted provide free services to blind and partially sighted people across County Durham. Currently these include befriending, telephone support, talking newspapers, computer mentoring, information, driver/escorts, support groups, resource centre, equipment loan. We are a registered charity, founded in 1987, working throughout County Durham with the exception of Darlington. The Society is managed by a Committee of trustees, the majority of whom have sight loss themselves and are service users.
Volunteer Role:
Fundraiser - this role is very varied and could involve organizing activities to raise funds at the university, contacting organizations for donations in kind to be raffled, organizing appeals to trust funds, etc.
Skills/benefits/experience:
Role specific training will be given and can also include visual impairment awareness training to inform volunteers of the client group they will be supporting. Skills and experience gained will include marketing, disability awareness, fundraising, promotion, events management, third sector awareness. The opportunity would be relevant to any students who are considering a career in the third sector.
