What: Preserved Colliery Railway and Scheduled Ancient Monument, The Bowes Railway restores, maintains and operates 1 ¾ miles of track and two rope hauled inclines. There are 2 steam locos and 3 diesels plus the largest collection of colliery rolling stock in the country.
Volunteer Roles:
1. Loco drivers, fitters, guards, crossing keepers
2. Track maintainers
3. Engineers – workshop fitters, turners, blacksmiths, electricians, plumbers, carpenters
4. Labourers
5. Advertising, marketing, public relations
6. Museum curatorial
Skills/benefits/experience:
Volunteers will get experience working on steam diesel locos, rolling stock etc.
Working with skilled staff in workshops they can learn welding, blacksmithing, turning, riveting, carpentry. Working on the track opportunities exist to learn how to maintain track and signalling.
On the museum side opportunities to experience collection management and conservation.
