PopUp Initiative – The NewBridge Project
What: PopUp Initiative is a new artist-led Community Interest Company which offers a response to empty business premises in Newcastle upon Tyne. Our first major venture ‘The NewBridge Project’ will comprise of studio space for up to 50 artists, ‘NewBridge Studio’, and a street level gallery below, ‘NewBridge Space’.
The NewBridge Project is unique as it offers an honest and unpretentious view of contemporary artistic practice, aimed to engage as wide an audience as possible. We are looking for volunteers to assist with running all aspects of the project - you will gain experience in public relations, curating, technical exhibition installation and project management.
Volunteer Roles:
Supervision of shows in NewBridge Space – this is a role that will be shared equally between volunteers and participants in NewBridge Project, it is a vital task while there are shows running. Volunteers may have to talk to the public about the work on show, they will be properly briefed about this beforehand. Volunteers will never be left alone and a Director will always be one site should there be an issue.
Skills/benefits/experience: Having participated in various voluntary programmes ourselves, it is of the utmost importance to us that volunteers gain as much experience as we are able to offer. This is not only directed at those looking to work in the creative sector; for example, volunteers can gain admin experience helping us with office tasks which may include marketing, press contact and creative design. Participants may also wish to gain project management experience, helping us to organise events such as gallery openings and ensuring that the open days run smoothly.
Skills needed:
Approachability
Communication
Politeness
General PC literacy
Punctuality
Organisation
Knowledge of contemporary art (preferably)
Commitment:
You can commit as much time as you feel you are able to the project. All we ask is that you inform us if you are unable to attend at any time.
Benefits to volunteers:
Volunteers will receive training on topics relating to their preferred role, travel expenses and lunch will be provided where necessary
