What: Salvation Army – a church with a social and community ethic.
Volunteer Role:
We work with all areas of the community in Gateshead and our need for volunteers range from practical things such as poster design, helping bag packing fundraising efforts to helping at community events which range from a community type day to helping people shop at on of our regular shopping nights at ASDA.
In the next few months we are preparing to move to a new location and may need help to conduct local surveys of what the community needs.
If people have specific skills such as massage, makeup etc we have regular ladies nights which are very popular as we provide mini treatments free of charge with the aim of providing the opportunity to improve self esteem. We would love to be able to do something similar for men as well.
If any one can juggle etc we can use that type of skill at a show we put on specifically for people with learning disabilities each year.
In fact you tell me what you can do and I will find an opportunity for you.
Maybe you could teach a young person to play a brass instrument?
Skills/benefits/experience:
You will learn how to communicate and engage with a wide range of people with differing intellectual levels and different needs. You will gain an understanding of the issues people face ranging from social isolation to problems filling in forms. You will see how we respond to various demands made on our services and how we provide a friendly and safe environment for people to come to or share in. You may be instrumental in sharing knowledge with us which benefits our activity programme. In exchange we have professional members who can overview your CV making it stand out. For serious volunteers completing more than 10 hours volunteering we can provide a certificate as well as show you how to write up the volunteering on your CV. You will be supported throughout your participation by CRB cleared volunteers or ministers
