Scrutiny

Alice Fish

Scrutiny Officer

End of term report (May)

What have you done this term?

I have continued to work with my committee to hold elected officers to account and we have submitted our final report to council. I have had the pleasure of being nominated for the Daniel Wood PTO of the year award which was a real honor. I have begun reflecting on my experience in the Scrutiny role in order to prepare a handover which I look forward to delivering.

What has been your biggest achievement?

Being nominated for the Daniel Wood PTO of the year award was a real highlight. It was fantastic to see all of the hard work the PTO team has done this year be recognized !

What could you have improved on?

Due to deadlines I’ve not been able to do quite as much in the role as I would have liked, for example, developing some form of training session for scrutiny committee members in the future. In hindsight, making this a greater priority would have been wise.

What piece of advice would you pass on to your successor?

Start early! Introduce yourself to your new committee and start meeting early in the year so you can get started on the work and ensure it doesn’t build up! And enjoy yourself! Scrutiny can be a hard job so remember to try and not take things so seriously all the time and enjoy meetings with your new committee. You may not know all or any of your new committee but you will be surprised how quickly you will all become friends.

As always I want to say a few Thank yous to those who have helped and supported me during my time as a PTO.  Firstly, I want to thank all the sabbatical officers   for your support. Thanks to Susan and Angela for keeping me right and answering my many questions when I come into the office. Thank you to George, Kay and Joe for your constant support and generosity and thanks to Simon and Lyndsey for assisting me with all my scrutiny related issues. Thanks to disciplinary committee for being passionate and so involved with your union.

I want to say a big thanks to the PTO team. Being a PTO isn’t always easy and this year was no exception but all of the challenges we have faced we have faced together as a team. I am so grateful for the friendships I made with you all and really hope to continue these on into the future. Some of my fondest memories of university have been made with you guys and for this I am so grateful.

Finally, a huge thank you to Scrutiny Committee. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with you this year. You've really helped to make my experience as a PTO a brilliant one. I have always looked forward to our meetings because of how enjoyable you all have made them and for the great insight and ideas you consistently brought to meetings. I have mostly enjoyed getting to know all of your unique personalities, each with your own passions. We as a union are so lucky to have such dedicated students being so involved in what matters to them.

I wish all of the very best for the future.
