Hi, I’m Sian Dickie and I would like to be your first Commuting Students’ Officer. I have already been campaigning for these issues important to students who live further away and I would like to develop some of the progress I have already made.
My main manifesto points are based on the testimonials I collected to create this role and my own experiences as a commuting student:
- A Bigger Discount on Public Transport - Tickets such as the Network One cost £1100. This is a cost which isn't exactly ideal for those on a student budget. Working alongside the University and possibly other educational institutions in the area, I would like to get a higher discount for students on public transport, especially those who commute outside Zone A (City Centre).
- Make Newcastle Paper Free! - I would like to stop the University from having physical hand-in requirements. Not only does this waste a lot of paper, but having physical hand-ins means that those who live further out can sometimes miss the deadline due to unreliable transport. It also makes it more difficult for those who have accessibility issues or caring responsibilities.
- A More Inclusive Freshers’ Week - I would like to work on building a network for those who live at home, so they can meet and talk with each other prior to the weeks events. Not only will this avoid those students attending activities alone or not at all, it will also make events safer.
- Better Storage Facilities On Campus - I would like to implement a secure storage facility for those who commute to campus. Sometimes it can be quite difficult to get involved with society events when you have to return home and drop off your things. Ideally, this would be available 24 hours with students’ being able to leave anything they need for the day.
Thank you for taking the time to read my manifesto and Please Vote for Sian Dickie as Your First Commuting Students' Officer!
