First Book Discussion - The Shadow King

For our first book discussion of the academic year, to celebrate black history month, we will be talking about The Shadow King by Maaza Mengiste, a novel recently shortlisted for The Booker Prize 2020. It is set in 1935 Ethiopia during the time of Mussolini's invasion and follows the life Hirut, a recently orphaned maid. Hirut decides that she wants to do more for her country and inspires many other women to join her in taking up arms and fighting back.
Places are free but we are opening this event for members only so please purchase our membership if you would like to join us! It will be taking place over zoom and details for this will follow closer to the time.
We will also be giving away a free copy of the book to a randomly selected member that signs up for the event so sign up soon on our NUSU sign up page to be in with a chance. We will be announcing the winner on the 11th October to give you time to read the book!
