Brief Description of Society Activities
We are the Newcastle representative branch of the Medical Women's Federation which is now the largest and most influential body of women doctors in the UK.
In the UK though the proportion of female medical students is 58%, the percentage of female doctors is now 45% and the number of female consultants has risen to 30%, women are still significantly underrepresented in many aspect of medicine including surgery, senior clincial academic positions and key medico-political roles.
We aim to hold events throughout the year to bring attention to issues affectiong women in the medical field and wider society, and how we can go about overcoming these barriers as women or as allies.
Our biggest event of the year, the Annual Symposium, is a day of inspirational talks, workshops, poster presentation and a panel from a diverse selection of medical women, usually held in early March. We are an intersectional society and are open to all genders, ethnicities, year groups and courses. Everyone is welcome to join.
Meeting Days, Times and Venues
Due to on-campus restrictions due to coronavirus pandemic, it is unlikely we will be hosting in person meetings until 2021. When these do happen it is likely they will take place on campus (usually in the Medical School). In the meantime we will be hosting talks and meetings online through Zoom.
