Description of Society Activities

Our Music Society promotes active music-making in an enjoyable and friendly setting within the University. The Music Society presents a termly concert showcasing our various student-led ensembles in addition to fantastic socials, open-mic nights, two annual balls and a ceilidh.

We currently have 10 ensembles who practice on a weekly basis:

- Brass Ensemble

- Chamber Orchestra

- Chamber Choir

- Voices

- Clarinet Group

- Flute Group

- String Ensemble

- Contemporary Orchestra

- Big Band

- Jimbongo

We are running our Join-a-Band programme for the second year in 2020-21. This will encourage pop, rock and jazz musicians from across the University to find like-minded people and make music together. This will be supplemented by workshops and jams througout the academic year in order to provide support for bands and opportunities for collaboration.

A variety of socials will be run every two to three weeks, including club crawls, bar crawls, themed nights and live mics. We will also provide dry-socials such as movie or board game nights that can be adapted to be distanced socials, if needed due to COVID restrictions. As a society we aim to be inclusive and provide events that will be great for everyone. Follow the social media pages for updates on upcoming socials!

Finally, we intend to host three larger scale events within the year; a Christmas ball, a post-exams ceilidh and an end of year Summer ball.
