Newcastle University Surgical Society (NUSS) is one of the largest and most active medical societies at Newcastle University, with a rich history of providing extra opportunities to undergraduate and postgraduate students wishing to pursue a career in surgery. We are truly passionate about providing value to each and every one of our members, providing all NUSS members with equal opportunities to develop their interest and bolster their surgical CV & portfolio whilst still at medical school.
Exposure to surgery within medical school is very limited - from opportunities to scrub into theatre, practice surgical skills or access research & networking opportunities; which is why at NUSS we endeavour to fill this void by organising & providing a huge variety of events & opportunities throughout the academic year. These include our surgical mentorship scheme; autopsy and theatre shadowing scheme; regular surgical skills tutorials; careers workshops; our own themed talks series, autopsy & cadaveric anatomy teaching and our very own selection of special events in association with the Royal Colleges of Surgeons, including the Surgical Careers Roadshow, National Undergraduate Surgical Conference and this year our brand new Women in Surgery evening!!
Our unique Surgical Mentorship Scheme launches every October and partners students with a local surgeon, who can offer invaluable advice and support, as well as acting as a route to get into theatre and access research opportunities. Our regular Surgical Skills Workshops allow members to develop their practical skills in surgery and we cater for a wide range of abilities from beginner to advanced suturing tutorials, laparoscopic skills sessions and specialist surgical skills. Regardless of career intentions, all graduating doctors need to be able to suture a simple wound and we offer several opportunities to develop and improve this key skill! This year, NUSS members can also benefit from our very own Surgical Skills Logbook through which they can log evidence of attending surgical skill sessions and learning practical skills e.g. cyst excision, knot tying, suturing and more!
Our networking events allow members to educate themselves on the many facets of surgical careers. These include different themed talks series each year (this year it is "Juniors in Surgery") and particular events to note include our annual Surgical Careers Roadshow and our new Women in Surgery evening this year! Our Surgical Careers Roadshow is a fabulous networking opportunity for members, during which they can find out about a range of surgical specialties and receive personalised advice at individual specialty stands. The Women in Surgery Evening aims to encourage greater participation and promote inclusivity for women in surgery by allowing members to engage and learn from renowned female surgeons, obtaining guidance about how to overcome possible challenges to successfully pursue a surgical career as well as bust some myths about surgical careers. In addition to this, we host our well-established National Surgical Conference every year in association with RCSEd, providing students with the opportunity to present research, hear from world-renowned surgeons from various specialties and partake in interactive workshops to develop their surgical skills and CVs.
We encourage all our members to take an active role in surgery and related activities to build their CV and forge a path to a successful future career in surgery.
Finally and most importantly, we are a friendly society and run several socials throughout the year (socially distanced if necessary). We are always happy to welcome new members and look forward to seeing both old and new faces this year!
