Brief Description of Society Activities
Newcastle FILM-SOC is for anyone passionate about cinema! For those of you who love talking about and viewing films: we watch them every Monday & Wednesday evening, and chat about them afterwards on our FILM-SOC Discord server! Want to get your film opinions out there? We host our very own Radio Show every Saturday where chat about all things film & that gets livestreamed on Facebook! More keen on making films? On Sundays we hold workshops on screenwriting, directing, acting, filming, producing, editing... As well as writing, filming and editing our own short films lead by our very own Heads of Production!
We are keen to bring together Newcastle University students of all courses and interests under one thing that unites us: our love for films. We believe there is a place for anyone in FILM-SOC, from the casual watcher to the most enthusiastic of film-buffs. Now, who’s got the popcorn?
Meeting Days, Times and Venues
Amidst the COVID-19 restrictions, we’ve moved all of our socials online – and here’s a brief description of what we do:
- Mondays: Netflix Parties
- Wednesday: BBC Together Screenings
- Saturday: Radio Show
- Sunday: Production Workshops
A sense of community is important to us, so we’ll also be hosting extra socials such as pub quizzes, party games, bad movie watch parties and more as we explore remote possibilities!
We highly recommend making a Facebook account if you don’t already have one so that you can join our FILM-SOC Members 2020/21 Facebook Group, as this is where we'll be uploading all our weekly events (https://www.facebook.com/groups/2708726922724054). This means:
- you’ll be notified of links to screenings
- be able to participate in voting/polls for what events to do
- be promptly notified when socials are announced.
There are no prerequisites for joining FILM-SOC. We welcome anyone from the casual viewer to the most enthusiastic of cinephiles. Anyone who joins FILM-SOC must recognise the potential dangers of watching/making films, however: members will be warned beforehand if there are any sensitive topics depicted in the film we’re about to show. Our Heads of Production are experienced in filmmaking, and will give members workshops on how to operate any equipment they are intending to use. So, there is no need for prospective members to have any prior knowledge of filmmaking equipment or processes on set. Now strap in and get comfy, this year’s gonna be a blockbuster!
