Campus tournament proves big hit with students

Campus Sport

Hosted by Newcastle University and the Students’ Union, The Summer Campus Sport Tournament brought together eight teams and societies, competing against each other across five different sports: 5-a-side football, dodgeball, netball, badminton and rounders.

Team Mechanical Engineering were crowned overall Summer Campus Sport Tournament Champions, after winning in dodgeball and rounders, and defeating Chemical Engineering in a sudden death rounders play-off.

Liam Isaac, Inclusive Sport Coordinator Newcastle University Students’ Union, said: “The Summer Campus Sport Tournament was a great success, and fantastic to see so many students engaged in the event over three days. Keep an eye out for the next campus sport tournament to be held winter 2017.”

Denis Murphy, Participation and Events Service Manager, Newcastle University, added: “We would like to thank all the students who participated for their commitment and enthusiasm, the hard work of all the captains must be applauded whom without we could not run the tournament.”

Over 20 Newcastle University London students travelled to the city to participate in the tournament. International Marketing postgraduate, Siobhan Lewis was one of them. She said: “The sports tournament was a really nice way for all of Newcastle University London to get to know each other better. It was excellent for us, as postgrads, to get to know the undergraduates and spend some time with them and our friends outside of university itself.

“The sports event was great for us because we all attended most events to support each other and our team spirit was high. It was really nice for us to attend as a community and represent London as the intimate unit we are. Although we did not win the event, we did come second in Dodgeball and third in Badminton and we were very proud of the achievement. As someone who studied their undergraduate at the Newcastle campus, it was nice for me to show everyone in London the rest of their University and it was so nice to be warmly welcomed by everyone.

“We are really thankful that both Newcastle University and Newcastle University London gave us the opportunity to attend the event and we will be encouraging people to take part next year.”

This was the second edition of the Newcastle University’s Campus Sport Tournament. The next tournament will be held in winter 2017. For more information, contact Denis Murphy (denis.murphy@ncl.ac.uk) or Liam Isaac (hallsport.union@ncl.ac.uk).
