The Best in Toon

It’s official – Newcastle University has been voted the best in the country for overall student experience!

This will come as no surprise to students who have been enjoying the city’s incomparable nightlife and relatively cheap living costs, all within an internationally recognised learning environment.

The University achieved top spot in a study conducted by University Compare, an independent organisation which aims to advise potential students on what university to choose after their A-levels.

To come up with its rankings, students were asked to give four key categories a mark out of five. The categories were institute and course, accommodation, employment prospects and social life.

Newcastle comfortably beat out competition from 425 institutions, including Leeds, Nottingham, Bristol and Liverpool, among others – with no other North East institutions making the top 10.

What’s more, the data was collected from a sample of 10,000 students – that’s a big sample size!

Thumbs Up From the President

NUSU President Ronnie Reid was unsurprised by the results.

He said, “we stand out for being a top class university in the best city in the UK. Not only will you gain a quality degree here, you’ll also experience an affordable, vibrant city.”

Of course, Newcastle has long been considered a party city, and it continues to stand out as the best nightlife spot in the country – one that is certainly more affordable than London! The thing is, there is so much more happening on campus and around the city as a whole these days.

A student body of 26,000 students means a rich creative and social scene that extends well beyond drink culture.

Ronnie said, “our clubs and societies are all encouraged to run non-alcoholic socials, and there are loads of opportunities across the city to go bowling or just watch a film for a very affordable price.”

The next job is to continue to build on the positive feedback of our students and to support them in their studies while also offering advice and guidance on the issues that matter most, including settling into the university experience, financial advice, and of course, helping students with life after university.

For now though, we’ll just bask in the glory of beating out the competition for another year and being the best uni for student experience in their own words!
