Our roadmap to restarting in-person Sport for students

The return to play!

Our Roadmap to Sports Returning

We have been so excited to share the fantastic news, that after weeks of meetings and planning we have a roadmap to restarting sport and exercise programmes in person. Many of you will have accessed the online support/programmes over the past twelve months and the great news is that we’ve learnt so much! So, we are committed to continuing this approach, complementing our in-person delivery.

The journey to restarting University Sport had additional responsibilities, particularly considering the City Council and Higher Education restrictions which are imposed. Therefore, we’re delighted to share the phased return to play, following key dates outlined below and aligned to the latest Government guidelines. These dates are indicative only and are subject to change should criteria not be met Country-wide.?Here are our proposed roadmap dates:

29 March* – Reopening of outdoor Sports Facilities

  • Clubs that have members currently staying in Newcastle are allowed to make use of the outdoor facilities. Including recreational programmes (Campus Leagues /Give it Go activities).

26 April – Reopening of indoor Sports Facilities (including the gym)

  • For use by individuals and household bubbles
  • All Athletic Union Clubs – outdoor
  • Intra Mural Clubs

17 May* – Organised indoor sport

  • AU Clubs – Indoors?
  • Fitness classes?

*These are the earliest dates and will depend upon Government criteria remaining on track.

Free use of Sports Facilities this Term

Continuing the positive news, we have been working closely with the University and University Sports Services ensuring full refunds have been granted for all facility memberships (please get in touch with The Sports Centre if you haven’t received a refund via your original payment method) and going a further step to ensure we have FREE sports facilities for all students who wish to use University Sports Facilities.

What does that mean for you? Every student has the opportunity to use the facilities for FREE until the end of Term. So, whether you enjoy a workout on your own, part of a team or with a housemate you can enjoy the (NEW) gym and wider facilities free of charge.

New 'rolling monthly' payment options for Sports Facilities

The driving force behind our work is always to provide the best possible experience and service for our students. This includes removing potential barriers to an active lifestyle. This is why I’m so excited to announce that after working with the University on a solution that offers the best service, flexibility and value for money, from next academic year, the Sports Services will introduce a ‘rolling’ monthly payment option for their facilities, which include the gym. This option will be available for 2 of the 3 new membership categories and there will no joining fee and no minimum contract period.

This allows our students to get value of money, supporting their lifestyles and giving them the best possible experiences we can.  Get in touch we’d love to get you involved.
