LGBT+ Awareness Week has been an annual campaign since 2015, organised to celebrate LGBT+ History Month, and the Newcastle Uni LGBT+ community.

The purpose of the campaign is to give LGBT+ students the opportunity to showcase what about the community and the history interests them, with talks, panels, and interactive stalls.   

  • Monday 19th:

Artists Beyond the Binary: An overview and discussion of the artists and musicians who transcend the gender binary, and the importance of nonbinary and gender-non-conforming visibility and self-representation. [Bambrugh Room, 6pm]

  • Tuesday 20th:

The Ace Talk: A discussion on the coexistence of the sex positivity movement and asexuality [Bambrugh Room, 1pm]

Toxicity in Queer Spaces: A discussion on how toxic attitudes, such as sexism, transphobia, and racism,  inside the LGBT+ community can affect its members. [Bambrugh Room, 6pm, NUSU Central]

  • Wednesday 21st:

Behind Closed Doors: a discussion on the unspoken violence affecting the LGBT+ community. [MLK Room, 1pm, NUSU L1]

‘Paris is Burning’ Screening + Discussion: In collaboration with BAME Society, a screening of the documentary chronicling the New York drag scene in the 1980s, focusing on drag balls, voguing, and the ambitions and dreams of those who gave the era its warmth and vitality.  [Bambrugh, 6pm]

  • Thursday 22nd:

Solidarity Forever: Looking at the legacy of the ‘Lesbian and Gays Support the Miner’s’ group and the intertwining of the working class and LGBT+ movements. [Bambrugh Room, 1pm, NUSU Central] Apologies this event has been cancelled 

LGBT+ and Politics: A panel in collaboration with Conservative, Labour, and Liberal Democrat societies, discussing why their parties are the best for LGBT+ students. [History Room, 6:30 pm, NUSU L1] Apologies this event has been cancelled 

  • Friday 23rd:

Self Care 101: A workshop highlighting the necessity of healthy coping mechanisms. Includes crafts, discussions, and snacks. [MLK Room, 1pm]

Queer Question Time: A panel of LGBT+ students across the university coming together to discuss everything and anything, ready to answer audience questions. [History Room, 6pm, NUSU L1]
