Fill the Holiday Gap

Fill the Holiday Gap – Summer Volunteer role 2019

During the school summer holidays period of 2019 there will be around 20 Community Organisations delivering FREE summer Holiday Activities across the whole of Gateshead running from July – August.

The schemes will include a range of activities such as sports, arts, cultural events, outdoor activities, environmental activities, musical activities and cooking opportunities.   Each session will also provide FREE nutritional lunch for all the children who attend.  There will be a number of volunteers from the relevant organisations already involved however there will also be additional volunteers needed to serve food, cleaning up after events, and leading some of the activities with the children and young people etc.

Each event will run for:

  • 4 hours per day
  • 4 days a week
  • 4 weeks over the period.

In total the maximum volunteer commitment required will be 64 hours over the full period.   However the amount of volunteer hours a volunteer contributes is flexible to their circumstances and what they can provide.

Fill the Holiday Gap aims to tackle the problems faced by some families that normally receive free school meals in Gateshead.  Providing those extra meals during the school holidays can be a real struggle for many Gateshead families.

The programme would welcome previous skills or experience in working with children, young people or families that can be provided.  Some of the volunteering will be around the wrap around services rather than the food itself.  The food is what will attract the participants, the activities and supporting volunteers will be what make participants stay and visit other projects through the summer of 2019.

Ideally volunteers need to:

  • have experience of working, delivering play schemes or supporting children, young people and families (desirable)
  • be patient (essential)
  • be approachable (essential)
  • have good communication skills (essential)
  • have experience of using Facebook (desirable for the relevant roles)

Some activities may require a DBS (Disclosure & Barring service) check this will be confirmed for each individual role and, if required under the new criteria, relevant volunteers will be supported through the process.

This is a great opportunity to gain valuable experience and develop skills within this field of volunteering, while only needing to commit over a set period of time.

Further information will be made available at a later date.  All registered volunteers who identify that they are interested in this role will be kept up to date with this information.
