Sports Connect works with children in Newcastle upon Tyne and connects them to local sporting activities. With a focus on inclusion we ensure that children with additional needs can play alongside their otherwise non-disabled peers. Sports connect has created opportunities where provision is lacking. Volunteers are required to assist the running of an inclusive walking group. Sunday strollers will explore the parks of Newcastle and build a community of outdoor enthusiasts.

Volunteer role

As a volunteer you will be given opportunities to work with children with different abilities and some from disadvantaged backgrounds. You could be supporting a child with Cerebral Palsy to develop their coordination, or mentoring a youngster on the Autistic spectrum; building their confidence in group situations. Your influence and drive to ensure that everyone is included will help a community to develop. Many youngsters I work with tell me that they ‘want to do what all the other kids do’; we can remove the barriers and ensure that sport is accessible to all. Parents often worry that they cannot access groups as their child may have behavioural needs, as a volunteer you can offer personalised and informal support to parents and carers.

You will help ensure everyone is safe, listened to, and gaining fully from this experience.

You will receive guidance from Stephen who delivers Sports Connect, informally during the sessions and in more formal situations as we develop this group together. The real gain will come from the youngsters and carers you will meet.
