¡VAMOS! Festival in the North East returns between Friday 12 and Sunday 14 July 2019 with events celebrating Spanish and Portuguese speaking cultures across North East England.

¡VAMOS! North East brings 3 days including; the vibrant and colourful Mardi Gras parade; a family friendly Picnic fiesta, international Djs; Carnival film screenings and talks; exclusive visual art exhibition; cutting edge International digital music release and an exclusive commission by international mural and street artist Vhils.

Launching on Friday 12th July at 4:30pm, Carnival Stories is an event which makes connections between carnival culture in the Caribbean and the North East. The event at Alphabetti Theatre features a film screening, talk and music workshop and music performances and workshops.

Following this on Friday 12th July at from 6.00pm-10.00pm is an exhibition by Brazilian artist Flavio Morais who presents new and recent work titled ‘Inutensilios’ featuring delicate wooden sculptures, detailed pen illustrations and minute drawings at Breeze Creatives Abject Gallery in central Newcastle.

Saturday 13th July is the main day of the festival and starts with the ever-popular and wonderfully exuberant Mardi Gras parade which takes place on Northumberland Street, Newcastle. From 12.00pm-1.00pm the street comes alive with a celebratory atmosphere featuring hundreds of children, musicians, artists and dancers. Community groups and the general public have all been learning dance and music routines via free sessions at the main city library supported by the Newcastle Culture Investment Fund at the Community Foundation.

Following directly after the parade is the official launch of an outdoor commission with internationally renowned Portuguese artist Vhils . The artist uses a distinctive technique carving in bas-relief and will reveal a special portrait of a significant historical figure at the historic Laing Art Gallery. The project has been developed in conjunction with Northern Roots and as part of the legacy of Freedom City 2017 with the commission concept devised by Chi Onwurah MP.

Moving to the popular Ouseburn area, ¡VAMOS! presents its popular family friendly includes 7 hours of live music acts, children's activities, dance workshops and the best of the regions Latin American street food!

The event features: Hannabiell & Midnight Blue, Kay Greyson, Salida, Azúcar, Yersin Rivas (Cuban Salsa class), Katie Symes (Zumba class), Cliff Blakey Band, Lindsay Hannon Shindig Choir and Chalk (with free kite making workshops). Plus Djs Alx Alfaro and Coco Vega all for free!

Staying in the Ouseburn area and strictly for the night time; the official launch party of Sonidos at Cobalt Studios. Sonidos is the free compilation of new South American and Caribbean music presented by ¡VAMOS! now in its 3rd edition. Co-curated by Nandy Cabrera (Uruguayan producer Selectorchico™) and Nikolas Barrera (¡VAMOS! Festival) it features extra Caribbean influence this year with Guampará Records' s own DJ Jigüe , (a favourite of tastemaker Gilles Peterson). The Afro-Cuban music producer provides an exclusive track for the Sonidos compilation and headlines this event with his “Afro-Futurist” DJ set. Jigue is joined on the night by percussionist EL Menor and DJ Adzmandala (Cosmifrica). ‘Sonidos Islas Volume 3 officially launches online on 13 July 2019.

Onto the final day of the North East edition of the festival, Sunday 14th July and ¡VAMOS! presents its wildly popular Beach Party taking place at Crusoes, on Longsands Beach, Tynemouth.

This is very much a family friendly affair with a programme of live music acts, Latin American DJs and street food all in the wonderful setting of Longsands beach. Artists on the night include; Alx Alfaro and Isla Soledad live plus Djs Yersin Rivas, Coco Vega and Alex Alfaro.

We are seeking people with a passion and openness for other cultures (an enthusiasm for Latin American culture is good but not essential!), who enjoy and seek new experiences, have an interest in events and the arts and who above all like helping people!
