Each year, we are asked to help recruit important volunteers for the Great North Run. 57,000 determined and dedicated runners make the Great North Run the World’s biggest and best half marathon – famous for its warm North East welcome, unbeatable atmosphere and the millions raised for good causes.This years event will take place on the 12th September 2021 right here in the centre of town.

2020 was due to mark the 40th GNR but the impact of Covid-19, this put the celebrations on hold, but will mark that monumental milestone this September instead, while doing everything they can to keep you safe in these unprecedented times.

National Autistic Society 

GREAT NORTH RUN 2021 CHEER POINT VOLUNTEER

Team Autism runners raise vital funds for the National Autistic Society, whilst also helping to raise awareness of the great need for our cause. As well as the pounding of feet on the streets, the cities of Newcastle, Gateshead and all places in between will move to the sound of rock, pop, brass, strings, steel and samba and having an enthusiastic support team makes such a difference to those taking part and fundraising for our charity

Giving them a boost by cheering them on or by making sure they have all the information they need on the day, as well as welcoming them at the start and the end of the race, will help the day to go smoothly for our fantastic fundraisers

What you will be doing:

We are looking for volunteers to join our team at a cheer point to help make as much noise as possible and create an electrifying atmosphere to help give our amazing runners that extra boost towards the finish line

When and where:

  • Newcastle/Gateshead/South Shields
  • Event date - 12th September 2021
  • Start at 10:30am until 2:30pm - we can be flexible on times

Support

  • There will be NAS staff on hand to support you when you are
  • The NAS Events team with provide you with information about the event
  • You will be given a NAS T-shirt and other equipment to help you make some noise and cheer on those taking part in the event
  • We can pay agreed out of pocket expenses such as local travel. These will need to be agreed with the NAS before the event

CHEER POINT VOLUNTEER

Where: Cheer points along the Great North Run Route. Precise location will be agreed prior to the day.

Description of main tasks specific to the placement:

  • Help set up the cheer point with branded materials and decorations.
  • Make lots of noise to cheer on our participants as they pass.
  • Be the friendly face of our charity
  • Other ad-hoc activities that may come up on the day

Details of any specific skills / attributes required by volunteer:

  • To be friendly and provide a positive impression throughout the day
  • Flexible and reliable
  • A lot of enthusiasm and a proactive attitude
  • Able to work on own initiative and as part of a team
  • Good communication skills
  • Children aged 13-15 can volunteer although they will be required to be accompanied by a registered adult volunteer at all times.
  • Applicants aged 16-17 will be required to have a consent form signed by their parent/guardian.

 

MARQUEE EVENT VOLUNTEER

Where: Town Moor, Newcastle upon Tyne

Purpose of the role: Help us show our support and solidarity for all our fantastic participants running in support of Newcastle Hospitals Charity and our funds including The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and The Great North Children’s Hospital.

Your role will be to help set up the marquee and then to meet, greet and welcome all of the runners after their run and thank them for their support. You will then network and chat with supporters and their families. You will help to provide the runners with refreshments and take on any other tasks as needed on the day.

Description of main tasks specific to the placement:

  • Help set up the marquee with branded materials and decorations.
  • Making runners and their families feel welcome and valued
  • Be the friendly face of our charity
  • Other ad-hoc activities that may come up on the day

Details of any specific skills / attributes required by volunteer:

  • To be friendly and provide a positive impression throughout the day
  • Flexible and reliable
  • A lot of enthusiasm and a proactive attitude
  • Able to work on own initiative and as part of a team
  • Good communication skills
  • Minimum age 16 (under 18’s will be required to have a consent form signed by their parent/guardian)

 

VOLUNTEER PHOTOGRAPHER

Where: Various locations across Newcastle City Centre

Purpose of the role:
Help us show our support and solidarity for all our fantastic participants running in support of Newcastle Hospitals Charity and our funds including The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and The Great North Children’s Hospital.
You will be located at the Charity Village on the Town Moor/along the Felling Bypass at Cheer Points. We need you to take photographs to help us capture the day including of runners, their families, volunteers and staff members. These photos will help inspire our supporters to take part in future events for us.

Description of main tasks specific to the placement:

  • A mixture of posed shots and actions shots taken at a variety of locations:
  1. Cheerpoint – action shots of the runners, in particular runners in Newcastle Hospitals Charity vests, Sir Bobby Robson Foundation vests and in The Great North Children’s Hospital vests.
  2. Cheerpoint – take pictures of the charity cheerpoint including decorations and branding, volunteers and staff
  3. Marquee – take pictures of the marquee, the decorations/branding
  4. Marquee – take pictures of the runners, their families, supporters, volunteers and staff. A mixture of action shots and posed shots

In line with the Data Protection Act 1998, we require all individuals you photograph to give their consent. This applies to our staff and the general public. Therefore, before photographing any individual, you must tell them:

  • Why you are taking the photos
  • Where will the photos be used
  • What they need to do if they decide to withdraw their consent in the future i.e email nuth.charity@nhs.net
  • They will need to sign our photography consent form if they are happy for their image to be used. This form also covers taking images of a child or young person up to the age of 18, where their parent/guardian/carer will need to sign giving their permission.
  • Ensure that you record the names of individuals you photograph

Details of any specific skills / attributes required by volunteer:

  • You must be either a photography enthusiast, photography student or ex-professional
  • You will be required to use own SLR digital camera
  • Qualifications are not necessary for this volunteer role but you may be asked to provide examples of your work.
  • Understanding of Data Protection Act 1998
  • Communication skills
  • Understanding that some individuals may not wish to have their photograph taken, this needs to be respected
  • Patience
  • As a representative of the charity, you will be required to provide a positive impression throughout the day
  • When taking photos, care must be given at all times not to obstruct the path of the runners or passers by

We are the world's leading independent cancer charity dedicated to saving lives through research, influence and information.

CHEERING TEAM

Join our cheering team and support our participants all the way to the finishing line! T-shirt and cheering equipment provided. Volunteers will be located on one of our open-top buses on the course route.

MEET & GREET

Meet our participants at the finish line and make sure they receive the post-race treatment they deserve by directing them to the Cancer Research UK reception. Volunteers will be based in the event village on the Town Moor, Newcastle.

Alzheimer's Research UK

Alzheimer’s Research UK is looking for volunteers to cheer on our incredible runners at the Great North Run on Sunday 12 September 2021. 

Starting and finishing in Newcastle, our #TeamARUK runners will take on the iconic Great North Run for the 40th year anniversary and we need you, your family and friends to whoop and cheer as loud as you can to support our runners along the course route. Join the buzzing atmosphere on race day and give our runners a vital boost as they go past, encouraging them to keep going and helping them to achieve their goal.  

We’ll provide an Alzheimer’s Research UK T-Shirt, banners, balloons, cheering sticks and everything else you need to stand out from the crowd!  

Why get involved?  

In return, as one of Alzheimer’s Research UK’s Cheer squad volunteers you’ll benefit from: 

  • Gaining a new volunteering experience and meeting an enthusiastic team of people. 

  • Soaking up the unbeatable atmosphere of an iconic, televised event that attracts some of the world’s top athletes. 

  • Getting an insight into the charity sector and how sporting events are managed. 

  • Support from a dedicated member of staff who will provide advanced briefing and a cheer team leader who will be on hand to support you throughout your volunteering on the day.

  • Reimbursement of reasonable out-of-pocket expenses.

Practical considerations 

  • Plan your journey to the cheer station in advance. 

  • You’ll be outdoors and standing for the duration of your volunteering so wear comfortable, weather appropriate clothing and footwear.

Rainbow Trust

CHEER SUPPORT

We have a team of 85 awesome runners taking on the GNR on Sunday 12th September. It’s a great event, with one of the friendliest crowds going and we’d love to have some support to cheer on our team! We will be armed with t-shirts, rainbow hair, noise makers, signs, jelly babies, you name it, we will have it! The Rainbow Trust Cheer point is the best place to be to soak up the atmosphere and it would be great to have lots of people there

  • Cheer point set up 10.30am, most runners should be through by 2.30pm
  • Cheer point location roughly mile 7 (roughly half way) – Leam Lane/John Reid Roundabout location.
