Action Tutoring is an education charity delivering tutoring programmes in schools, to support disadvantaged pupils across Newcastle.  We want to ensure these pupils are able to reach their potential through our tutoring support and help them achieve regardless of their backgrounds.  We recognise how powerful tutoring can be in supporting a child academically and we believe it shouldn't be accessed only by those who can afford it.

“My tutor was really supportive and helped me even when I felt like giving up.”

Secondary school maths pupil

We are looking for local volunteers to support us as our tutors.  Through this activity you’ll be able to develop and use a wealth of different skills and be connected to the youngest members of your community.

"As well as being a very worthwhile cause , it's a very rewarding experience for the time it takes."

Claire, Maths tutor and Newcastle University PhD student in the School of Engineering

The commitment is small – an hour a week, for just over two months - and the volunteering takes place on the school premises with a member of our team on hand to supervise your sessions every week.   We provide all of the workbooks and resources you’ll need to use, so you can carefully structure your tutoring and we provide an initial induction training and give ongoing support to help you develop as a tutor.  We also can cover up to £5 each week for travel expenses.

“Tutoring is a great privilege for children like me to encounter and it helps, so thank you.”

Primary school pupil, London

Last year we supported nearly 2,500 pupils through 1,100 volunteer tutors in 80 schools across the country.

“I have loved doing this! It is very satisfying to feel you are making a difference to the pupils and it’s been a great way to use the skills I developed in my teaching career. I also enjoy the social aspect - coming along with the other volunteers - and the school has been very welcoming.”

Maria, Maths tutor and retired teacher & university lecturer
