The NUS referendum result was announced during the President’s State of the Union report. If you haven’t already heard……….52% voted to remain out of NUS with 48% voting to re-join – try not to go down the Brexit memory lane. The voting quorum (5%) was not reached in the 1088 people voting in the referendum meaning that the result will need to be approved by the Trustees in their board meeting on the 13th December.
In other Council news
With 3 motions to debate the business started with Raff Marioni’s ‘FUNDING FREE MENSTRUAL PRODUCTS ACROSS CAMPUS’ passed with a magnificent 100% (no abstentions). This will support Raff’s campaign in talks with the University to fund free menstrual care products across campus. More details to come as plans progress.
Jamie Cameron’s motion ‘demanding greater transparency and more regular information on Newcastle University’s investments, including fossil fuel divestment’ passed with 89% Yes. The Newcastle Fossil Free campaigners hope that this will help move their campaign forward by giving them access to the information they need to re-visit the 2016 campaign result.
And so to Christmas business. Council agreed that it was ‘beginning to look a lot like Christmas’. The motion ‘Does Council know it’s Christmas time?’ resolved the Chair to dress in full Santa attire and to wish all Councillors to ‘Have themselves a Merry Little Christmas’. Even the appearance of the Grinch, who’s heart, it was argued, is 2 sizes too small couldn’t stop the motion passing.
