Council 2 - Council Harder!

Council Logo It was pretty constitutional

Student Council returned with significantly less motions than October, leaving plenty of time for our big open debate.

We kicked off with three constitutional which remarkably all passed by 95% with 4 abstentions! That’s some impressive consistency. The first motion mandates all Sabbatical Officers to attend the Executive Committee’s that they’ll be taking over when they start their role. Next, Officer Job descriptions were updated to remove reference to RAG (Raising and Giving), as they were once a fundraising arm of NUSU and now they’re a society.  And, the final motion provided a small shake-up to Council, with the introduction of Student Notices to Council! More on that later!

The contentious motion this Council proved to be Scrutiny Officer Jamie Cameron’s motion, which would have mandated President Raff Marioni to lobby the University to make Ecosia our default search engine. Ecosia is a social business that uses their profits from searches to plant trees. Ultimately this motion failed to pass as there was several concerns over whether there might be other search engines worth exploring first, and that more research was needed.

Thanks to the Council Procedures motion, we held our very first Student Notices section. This new feature proved incredibly popular and got a wide range of student from clubs, societies and PTO’s standing up to let Council know what other Student Union activities they could get involved in.

And finally, the first open debate this year focused on the role of NUSU’s Postgraduate Sabbatical Officer, which will be introduced for the 2019/2020 academic year. Education Officer Jonny Hall introduced the debate, explaining NUSU’s plans for consultation on what the role should entail, and asked Council to feed into how the new officer could support Postgraduate students. It turned out to be a very lively debate with lots of valuable input which will feed into the ongoing consultation.
