Crisis in Ukraine: A statement from your Sabbatical Officer team

CW: Ukraine crisis

CW: Ukraine crisis

CW: Ukraine crisis

As a sabbatical team, we wanted to address the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. We stand in solidarity with all those affected by the crisis and all who are in danger of violence and oppression, and we hope that the situation will be resolved peacefully soon. We, like many of you, feel helpless in this situation and this statement doesn’t feel like enough but our thoughts are with the people of Ukraine and all those affected.

We are aware that our students may also be affected by these events and that this is a deeply troubling and difficult time for them and those close to them. NUSU is a safe space which welcomes all students. We offer our support to those in need and would like to take this opportunity to signpost to the University and Union services.?

In the days and weeks to come we will continue to work with the University to ensure specialist support is in place.??Our priority is always to support our students and we hope the following information is helpful:

  • Student Health and Wellbeing have been reaching out to students directly and are here to offer support to all students who may find it helpful. 24/7 support is available using the Talk Campus app here. Please contact 0191 208 3333 or email wellbeingconsultancy@newcastle.ac.uk if you would like to speak with one of their welfare team about any concerns.?
  • The Student Advice Centre can help with practical guidance on a range of issues. You can find out more here - Student Advice Centre (nusu.co.uk)
  • The Welfare and Support Centre is located adjacent to the NUSU reception. Please pop in for a chat if this is helpful.??
  • Personal Extenuating Circumstances (PECS) – You can contact your school for further guidance.??
  • Student Finance Team have also prepared a package of support where there may be a financial or infrastructure concern? https://www.ncl.ac.uk/student-financial-support/?

If any students are feeling vulnerable, know that we take discrimination very seriously so please get in touch if needed - wsc.union@newcastle.ac.uk. Students can also get in touch if they would like to support humanitarian efforts and the SU can help coordinate. If any students are looking to donate to the humanitarian cause, please ensure that it is a legitimate charity as we are aware that there are some scams on social media.
