NUSU Stands in Solidarity with Refugees and Asylum Seekers

We at NUSU are deeply concerned about the devastating situation in Afghanistan and know it is very distressing for many of our students. As a community, we are reaching out to express our support for welcoming refugees and asylum seekers to Newcastle and believe this should be the case across Newcastle and the UK.

Statement from your NUSU Sabbs

We at NUSU are deeply concerned about the devastating situation in Afghanistan and know it is very distressing for many of our students. It is our belief that no person should be abandoned or refused the right to live safely with equal opportunity.

As a community, we are reaching out to express our support for welcoming refugees and asylum seekers to Newcastle and believe this should be the case across Newcastle and the UK.

In immediate response to support people and families coming into the city in the next week, NUSU’s student-led project North East Solidarity and Teaching (N.E.S.T), are aiming to produce 350 care packs of basic toiletries and clothing. If you are able, NEST are asking for donations of good quality second hand clothes as well as new and unopened underwear, socks and toiletries.

N.E.S.T are also recruiting for students and staff to volunteer to support the delivery of English Language tuition and community integration projects including sports clubs, youth programmes and trips. A wide range of roles are available with a high demand for volunteers interesting in working in schools with refugee children. No experience is needed, training is provided, and all are welcome.

NUSU and N.E.S.T will continue working to support Afghan refugees and asylum seekers coming to Newcastle throughout the course of this year.

Please contact nest.union@ncl.ac.uk for interest in volunteering, to donate clothing/ money or for further information about how to support the project.
