Leave Newcastle Happy litter pick Getting things done!

Leave Newcastle Happy is a highly successful, end of year, clean-up campaign organised and led by Newcastle University Students’ Union and Newcastle University Students.

Now in its’ fourth year, this end of summer term event, combines a city wide donation campaign on behalf of the British Heart Foundation with a clean-up/recycling campaign focussed in and around Jesmond.

During the 2016/17 Leave Newcastle Happy campaign, students donated 7000 bags of unwanted items, raising £124,000 for the British Heart Foundation.

The campaign is in response to resident complaints about leftover rubbish from students moving out of their private accommodation, as well as the University and Students’ Union’s commitment to sustainability and recycling.

Staff volunteered alomgside students, residents and local councillors, in the daily litter picks.

Community Reps collected unwanted food to be donated to those in need or bought for a donation with proceeds going to the British Red Cross.

Through the efforts of the Jesmond ASB Working Group, the University has added support to the Students’ Union to help enhance in the past year an already very positive campaign by funding rubbish skips to be located in key areas across Jesmond and West Jesmond. A much needed and welcomed addition to the campaign.

“It’s been great for the community, both in terms of the practical effect and also the psychological effect of seeing students and long-term residents working to tackle the problem” – Jesmond resident
