NUSU's Response to University Consultation

NUSU does not favour alllowing boards of studies to designate final stage modules as core.

As Your Voice has previously reported, the University is currently holding a consultation looking at whether the University should allow “core” modules at the final stage of undergraduate degrees. You can find out more about the consultation and its proposals here.

Over the last few weeks, NUSU's Education Officer Chris Duddy and Representation Support Worker Joe Barton have been soliciting the views of students on the proposals. They have discussed the issue with School Reps at the May meeting of the Education Executive Committee, at Student Staff Commitees, and have directly contacted School Reps in relelvant subjects. They have also invited wider views via the Your Voice website and social media.

Based on the feedback you gave, NUSU has now made an official response to the consultation.

NUSU does not favour alllowing boards of studies to designate final stage modules as core. In the event that the University takes the decision to allow this, however, NUSU favours the option of allowing resits but not restricting the classification of the award.

Approaching the issue from the perspective of improving student experience, NUSU does not favour allowing boards of studies to designate final stage modules as core. While our members appreciate that these changes would lift the administrative burden for some boards of studies, they nevertheless do not feel that the arrangements as they currently stand disadvantage students who are required to take final stage core modules. In considering this alongside the apparent lack of wider demand for such changes from staff and the student body, our members deemed the status quo to be satisfactory.

You can download the full response here.

The deadline for contributions to the consultation from departments across the University closes on 16 June. The University will then make a decision on the responses. As as NUSU is made aware of the outcome of the consultation, we will inform you.

If you have any further questions about the consultation, feel free to contact Joe Barton at rsw.union@ncl.ac.uk
