Give It A Go is NUSU's exciting activity programme for all Newcastle students and staff! This year GIAG has adapted to the pandemic to ensure the safety of everyone participating through predominantly online delivery. With more activities available than ever before through live zoom classes, recorded tutorials, or activities posted on social media - it has provided opportunities for students to meet each other, gain experiences, try something new, and have fun - which has been whole heartedly welcomed during such difficult circumstances. The team has delivered activities throughout the year supporting students over the winter break and continues to try out new activities for you to be involved in.
This year GIAG has delivered 426 activities
Engaged over 2214 participants
Worked with NUSU societies and clubs to offer 110 student-led sessions
And all activities were rated an average of good or amazing - positively impacting the student experience!
Here's some feedback from our student participants:
“My roommates and I really enjoy the Monday and Friday sessions with Scott. His classes are awesome.”
“The Friday (slow paced exercise class) session is properly my favourite. Always feels well paced well and more personality over zoom.”
“I love the Yoga sessions, especially as they get recorded so I don’t have any bad feelings if I miss one. Just email and catch up when I have time.”
“The event (Speed Friending) was great, I met a lot of new people, I loved it.”
“Fantastic session (Zoomba Zumba). The leader was great, full of energy and made you feel involved in the session. I really enjoyed getting to go to a free active event from home as I'm not leaving the house so appreciated the opportunity to do something active but without having to commit to a full term's membership.”
“I had so much fun doing Zumba! I had a smile on my face throughout. A great way to try out something I've never done before.”
“It was amazing (Face Yoga), I've been getting so much tension in my face, head and neck from working at a computer so much. This relieved the pain.”
“The session was engaging and I learnt something that can be applied to my daily routine. I signed up to the (Leadership) society after the event.”
Louise A (Activity Assistant) testimonial:
“I have loved being an Activity Assistant for GIAG, I've been involved with all kinds of activities including virtual cooking & baking sessions, crafts sessions, virtual tours and more! Although this year has been very different to the normal programme, it has been amazing organising different activities for students. I think these virtual events have helped students who wanted to try something new, make new friends or just want a chat. My favourite activities have been hot chocolate bomb making and baking mince pies on the festive programme.
Working with GIAG has definitely positively impacted my student experience. Throughout lockdown, I have taught myself baking, cooking and different crafts so I can deliver great activities. I've even now taken them up as a hobby.
I am currently studying the Career Development Module on the learning from work route, as part of my degree. The skills I am learning with GIAG relate to my career aspirations and allow me to develop the skills that employers are looking for.”
