Term 1 Community Rep Update

Community Reps and a Councillor Community Reps in Action

Getting the most out of your time at Newcastle is a big deal to NUSU. We have a passion and are dedicated to making sure all aspects of your time at Newcastle has a positive impact on your academic life. Living in the local community and enjoying everything Newcastle has to offer, is probably one of the most enjoyable times of your time here. From time to time there issues arise for students and the Community Rep structure is one of the ways we try to support you. Issues from lack of bin provision, parking and noise complaints can occur and if they are not addressed can sometimes lead to tension between student residents and permanent residents.

We recruit student reps in the main student areas of the city.

  • Jesmond
  • West Jesmond
  • Heaton
  • City Centre
  • Sandyford
  • Spital Tongues and West

In term 1 we have been discussing our priorities and campaigns.  After attending Ward meetings and talking to students the Reps have been feeding back their thoughts and there are some recurring issues that we hope to focus on this year.

  • Bins and recycling
  • Gardens
  • Personal safety
  • Broken Glass

Alongside this the Community Reps are supporting the Help the Homeless shoe box donation project, helping make Christmas as good as it can be for people experiencing homelessness. Links have been made with the City Council and the elected Councillors to continue the great work in the community.

More to come throughout the year! To get in touch with your Community Rep please email.
