Trick or Treat for the Hungry

Halloween Pumpkins Support a good cause this Halloween

This Halloween a group of Newcastle students will be knocking on your door to collect food donations instead of sweets.

Adam Kinneen and Kerri Robson, students who are both involved in the project told NUSU that 18,000 tonnes of food gets wasted at Halloween each year and Newcastle students want to do their bit to help. The project is in support of the Trussell Trust  and the Newcastle East Foodbank.

Over 90% of the food distributed by foodbanks in The Trussell Trust network is donated by the public – that’s why your food donations are absolutely vital to their ability to give everyone referred to them a balanced and nutritious three day supply of food.

This shopping list shows the food items that they need right now.

URGENTLY NEEDED FOOD ITEMS

  • TINNED FRUIT (400GMS)
  • SMALL JARS OF COFFEE
  • TINNED VEGETABLES
  • TINNED MEAT/FISH
  • RICE PUDDING (TINS)
  • PASTA SAUCE - NOT CURRY
  • JUICE - CARTONS OR SQUASH
  • TINNED POTATOES

THEY HAVE GOT PLENTY OF

  • BEANS
  • CEREAL

So when you hear the knock on the door on the 31st don’t turn the lights off and hide but grab a spare can of food from the cupboard and donate to help people who are less fortunate. If you miss the knock you can donate in the students’ union reception area.
